When I first heard about these new display figures from WETA I was somewhat apprehensive. After all, we have seen quite a few models over the years, all limited editions, display pieces and so on. To my mind there's only so many you can have!
But WETA have a better pedigree than most having worked on THE LORD OF THE RINGS films, and having proved that they can produce items of quality and beauty.
Now I have actually seen the new Dalek statue, I am blown away.
I think my first thought was that it was going to be quite small ... well it's not. The whole statue stands around 12 inches tall and comes packed in an attractive box.
Then inside you have a secure polystyrene package in which the parts of the statue nestle like bars of gold, each carefully wrapped.
This is such a beautiful item. The base is heavy and impressive, numbered on the underside and signed by the two men who crafted this item, David Tremont and Daniel Cockersell. The Dalek figure sits securely on this base.
The figure out of the box is impressive enough, but then you have to add to it the eyestalk, plunger arm and exterminator gun to complete the effect.
The attention to detail is magnificent. If they had chosen just to go with a model Dalek, then it would have been great, yes, but we *have* model Daleks coming out of our ears with superb scale figures from Character Options, not to mention bubble baths! So whoever decided instead to go with the 'opened' Dalek from the end of the story 'Dalek' deserves a medal!
This makes the model so much more interesting, from the designing of all the parts, to the little Dalek mutant sitting inside, this is a true work of art. I really cannot gush about it too much! From every angle it exudes quality, and I want to rush out and buy an illuminated display stand right this moment in which to display this item. The fact that I have nowhere to put such a stand is incidental ... I will find somewhere!
I mentioned that the detail is perfect - well the little eye has a blue cornea, and the flanges around the eye are tiny and well formed. The exterminator has little tubes all around it, and every part, from the plunger to the smallest rivet hole on the casing is reproduced perfectly.
This is a superb and stunning addition to a collection, and the item is limited to 900 units. I have no idea what the take-up has been as it costs £160 to buy (currently there is a discount running on the WETA site making it £144), but I think that anyone who actually sees this will want to look very carefully at their finances to see how they could possibly obtain one.
