Re: Age Of Steele Cyberman Figure Set « Result #6 on Sept 25, 2009, 8:43am »
I will try and post some pics of the sets at the weekend if non-one else beats me to it!
The packaging in itself is interesting as it has been totally revised from previous sets. Far lighter rectangular boxes are used (opening from ends rather than top) with shiny red (series one), blue (series 2), green (series 3) and silver (Age of Steel) as the main colours of outer packaging and inner sleeves. The current BBC logo (on purple background) is prominent on all of the boxes and, unlike previous sets, the figures are illustrated on the back of the box by pics of pre-production "rigid" versions with the characters names (no details other than the stories the various Cybermen come from on the Age of Steel box). In previous releases there has always been photos of the real characters and blurb about them or the story they appeared in. I have to say I rather like the new boxes which appear to be easy to open and the figures can be stored in them (although the usual tag wires secure them in place in the boxes when bought).
They are also far easier to store/stack than other examples - a very big plus as far as I am concerned!!
I suspect the revised packaging is a cost cutting exercise but it works better in my opinion for standard figure releases.

Stocks were low David and I haven't seen them in other local Tesco stores yet but I suspect UK distribution is underway and I wouldn't be surprised if they end up reduced again after Xmas. Even at £10 that is good value - especially the 3 Cybermen set!
In the Series One boxset - the 1st Doctor comes with Mickey head etc (as per one of the carded releases) and Jabe with a metal spider.
All in all good value sets (particularly the Series 3 one with 2 all new figures) - I wonder why there is no series 4 set?
Anyone know who is stocking the Age Of Steele Cyberman Figure Set with “The tenth planet”, “tomb of the cybermen” and “The invasion” cybermen.
Has this been released yet??? What is the retail price???
Tesco in Dalkeith had this and the other 3 figure sets in today(they are exclusive to Tesco) - price stickers saying half price and selling for £10 each (so beware that some stores wil no doubt have them at the full rrp of £20). The stickers do come off with care without damaging the packaging. Not quite sure why the classic cybermen set hs the banner "Age of Steel" but the box is nice with photos on the back of the pre-production versions with the correct Invasion headgear!!

Have to try and get to a Tesco over the weekend ... I think there's one in Rhyl ...

Torchwood Novels « Result #12 on Sept 1, 2009, 3:37pm »
today i picked up a few torchwood novels in and around the shops. i like to read these on my days off, and before today only had six of the twelve published. i had bought a few from ebay and collected those today, plus one other i treated myself to in a bookshop.
i think they are better than the doctor who novels by far, the writing is much more adult like the show.

Re: Movie Versions Of Episodes On VHS « Result #15 on Aug 25, 2009, 1:31pm »
just watched enlightenment (movie edition), and it was fantastic. apart from the CGI looking as if it didn't feel right, this was a fantastic edit, shame the theme was slighty altered compared to the original.
The Packaging The clear lid of the 'bread bin'-shaped container is embossed with Time Lord-style roundels and secured by an encircling strip of Cellotape which, on my example, was extremely sticky and proved impossible to remove in one piece.
My tip for opening these Dalek collectors' sets is to trim under the lid with a sharp knife - ie don't try to remove the sellotape - you only need to go round the front of the lid and then it will "hinge" backwards and let you lift the inside content out carefully. Also works for the 4th Doctor set and the various new series recent sets too but be careful as the paper inserts are very flimsy and subject to tear or folding when replacing the plastic insets!
With care you can remove the models but also store them in their boxes and they look almost as good as new!
This was a presumption on the part of Jeremy Bentham years ago when he and his team were writing "Adventures in Space and Time" (later to be renamed In-Vision for the Tom Baker years onwards).
You know, for years I've been trying to remember where it was I first read that the Zebra was painted with red oxide primer: I had thought it was in the Sevans painting guide, but couldn't find the reference in my copy when I dug it up. CMS. Of course! Thanks for that.
Even though the primer theory is dead, the question remains - why the weird paint-job for one week only? My theory is that there was damage to some of the panels in question and the gunbox, which had to be quickly bodged and disguised. Although the Dalek 6388 site disagrees, I hold that the two Blackball Daleks were those borrowed back from Barnardo's - aside from the damaged gunboxes, and the distinctive middle neck-ring repair on the Zebra, both of them have lenses inconsistent in size with the five lens Silverballs, but consistent with the nine lens arrangement used in Story B.
(Dalek 6388 contends that the two Blackballs were the two new Daleks built for this story by Shawcraft. Whilst I have a lot of respect for the scholarship which has gone into that site, on this subject - and on this subject alone - I believe they've drawn the wrong conclusion. Whilst Shawcraft weren't perfect, I can't see them producing two "new" Daleks in such a tatty condition, particularly in comparison to the other four which they had refurbished in readiness for DIOE. A counter-argument could be made that the Barnardo's daleks were returned immediately after the end of production, but the Zebra/DS remained in BBC service until at least 1969 [or at least its neck-rings did]: however, it's more likely that they just swapped Daleks and retained the distinctive DS for promotional purposes, not least the loan to the Daily Mail Boys and Girls Exhibition over the Christmas holidays which immediately followed. Interestingly there is a picture of a childrens party featuring two Daleks, one Blackball and one Silverball: as the party was hosted by a company specialising in equipment for disabled children iirc, it's not much of a stretch to suggest that these are the two "new" Barnardo's Daleks on loan to a supplier.)

Spinning TARDIS Bubble Bath From ASDA « Result #18 on Aug 21, 2009, 4:05pm »
this is a lovely item.
if you haven't come across it, it is a bottle of bubble bath with a section on top on which you push a button and a small plastic tardis lights up and spins around on the top, and then splits in two to reveal a small plastic figure of david tennant. a lovely item and much more releastic than the flight control tardis!
available at ASDA stores, £3.98. picked mine up today.
if you're asda doesn't have one or there isn't an asda near you, then here's a chance to bid on Ebay (has 2 days left):
As the story goes, the "Saucer" Dalek featured in "Dalek Invasion of Earth" was principally because there hadn't been enough time to paint it fully in black until later into the story. So technically both Daleks are the same! Richard
This was a presumption on the part of Jeremy Bentham years ago when he and his team were writing "Adventures in Space and Time" (later to be renamed In-Vision for the Tom Baker years onwards). Little information was known at the time, and it was before access to the BBC Written Archives was gained.
Jeremy presumed that there hadn't been time to complete the paint job (seen full the following week when the Dalek appeared all-over black). He also therefore presumed the Dalek may have been a Red-Primer colour.
There are two things wrong with this. Firstly, why prime alternate panels if the Dalek was due to be painted black all-over, and secondly, the Dalek was painted with water-based paints, the type that the studio floor was painted with, which don't need a primer (see the FX footage of a Dalek dome being painted black for Evil of the Daleks on the Lost In Time DVD).
During recording of The Chase and The Daleks' Master Plan (when the BBC were back down to four Dalek props of their own), they would wash the black paint off the Black Dalek if it wasn't needed in studio for the recording of an episode, so that the production team had four silver Daleks to work with.
You will note that from The Chase onwards, the shoulder section (which was now covered by the mesh and slats/solar panels) was not painted black, it would have been too awkward to paint and wash off the paint behind the slats/solar panels.
There is a photo of the Black Dalek with the paint washed off from recording of The Chase on the Mirrorpix site...
...search Daleks and click on the image of the two silver and blue Daleks for a larger picture (I don't think a direct link works). The one with the broken neck-ring and grubby dome, is the Black Dalek.

I received my B&W Hartnell and Troughton packs earlier this week. I've always loved the DIOE daleks (my own Dalek, Daffyd, is based on the Zebra version released in the new dalek pack.)
One minor quibble - the hemi's on the Dalek seem almost pink in hue. Is this just me?
(And the Hartnell/Troughton figures look rather eerie - the loss of colour combined with three dimensions makes them look a little as if they've risen from the grave!)

Character Options Dalek Collector's Set #2 « Result #21 on Aug 20, 2009, 11:36pm »
Coming hot on the heals of the recently released 'First Doctor & Dalek Saucer Commander Set', we now have the eagerly anticipated Character Options Dalek Collector's Set #2.
The set consists of three 5” plastic Daleks, representing variants seen in the serials ‘The Dalek Invasion of Earth’, ‘Evil of the Daleks' and 'Day of the Daleks’. As with previous CO classic Dalek releases, all of the appendages are poseable, the domes rotate and the figures will freely roll across a smooth surface on small wheels fitted to the base given a gentle nudge. So, in detail:
The Packaging The clear lid of the 'bread bin'-shaped container is embossed with Time Lord-style roundels and secured by an encircling strip of Cellotape which, on my example, was extremely sticky and proved impossible to remove in one piece.
Once the lid is off the Daleks and inner base/backing piece can be lifted out. Each Dalek is secured to the inner packing by two twist-ties, one running up through the base and one around the neck. There is also a thin, soft, vinyl band stretched around each neck bin and eye stalk to keep the latter items in place during transit.
Dalek Invasion of Earth Variant Described on the packaging as a 'Saucer Pilot Dalek', this is a representation of the stripe-skirted variant also known as the Earth Taskforce Commander or Saucer Commander. It comes complete with the large extended fender and rear-mounted parabolic 'energy collector' dish, which in combination were modifications unique to the television Daleks seen in the DIOE serial.
Evil of the Daleks Variant This is the Emperor's Guard version, with the signature black dome. The hemis are correctly painted a darker shade of blue than those on the 5" Daleks from 'The Daleks' and ‘The Dalek Invasion of Earth’, which CO have issued previously. CO's researchers don't seem to have missed a trick.
Day of the Daleks Variant The packaging describes this Dalek as a 'Supreme Dalek', although I don't think this attribution was ever made in the serial itself. It's more often referred to as a 'Dalek Leader', or the Gold Dalek. The gold colour looks to be a good match for the original prop. The increased skirt height as seen in the Day of the Daleks is accurately modelled in scale, although no attempt has been made to represent the flexible plastic lower section which was fitted to the original props.
Criticisms? When casting a critical eye over these figures it has to be borne in mind that they are being sold as toys, not scale models. That said, the eagle-eyed might cock an eyebrow at the depth of the lower collar where it runs under the gun boxes, the position of the two front shoulder slats, the shape of the chest oval (where present) and wish that the parabolic dish was slightly deeper. The Gold Dalek's eye pupil has been moulded in relief and painted gloss black, causing it to catch the light. Given the tiny size of the item in question, this inaccuracy is strangely noticeable. Quality-wise my Gold Dalek seems suffer from a few faults. One dome light is misshapen, there's a small gap between the upper neck ring and the neck bin, and the fender was misaligned at the rear. (This was easily cured by removing the four tiny screws in the base and re-seating it).
Conclusion Character Options continues to maintain the high standard of their previous 5" classic Dalek offerings, rendering this set yet another real treat for the mini-Dalek enthusiast. Thoroughly recommended. My set was ordered over the internet at £19.99 plus p&p from Forbidden Planet, whom I can't fault in terms of ease of ordering and delivery. Recent Dalek acquisitions have all arrived promptly, securely contained in boxes of the size used to hold five reams of A4. The boxes were stuffed with packing paper to make sure nothing moves around. The latest Dalek Set was also wrapped in a sheet of tissue paper, presumably to ensure that the clear plastic container remained unmarked. That's the sort of extra effort which serious collectors may well appreciate.

Hi!
I was in my local Forbidden Planet (Aberdeen) the other day and they have plenty of these Doctor and Dalek sets. Various one's in colour, B/W and with various Doctors. However they were all priced at an unbelievable £24.99 each! Even the staff thought they were overpriced! I also saw the Blue Coat Sixth Doctor. He was a bit cheaper but I can't remember how much. Think he was around £14.99.

i agree they shouldn't be optional extras. but it will certainly be a shame if silver nemisis is released without the bonus material, i have the VHS (which i got for free when it was given to me by a mate!) but have yet to watch it...

I agree whofan. I`ve gone through phases over the years, but i do prefere the movie versions, especialy with the dvds and the extra material that is inserted into the story. I wish they would do more of this, rather than have them as optional extras. I believe the release of Silver Nemesis on dvd will not have the augmented scenes as the vhs did. Why i don`t know!
Movie Versions Of Episodes On VHS « Result #27 on Aug 8, 2009, 10:49am »
Hi Guys.
when the bbc first started releasing who on video, they put the episodes from the serial for sale into one long film instead of the seperate episodes. many fans did not like this; and it stopped in 1989.
but i am one of fans who does like it. rather than keep stopping every 25 mins and listening to the theme music, there feels a better sense of continuity and understanding of the story.
my main favourite is the "heavily-edited" brain of morbius, cut from 95 minutes to 60. i feel although alot of material is omitted, this is the boring material. the story seems to go a little faster and is therefore more exciting to watch. i don't believe any vital scenes are omitted, a good thing.
nowadays we see some releases of movie edition on dvd - ie curse of fenric and battlefield. these are much easier to watch, and because alot of vital material was ommitted from broadcast causing confusion, it is reinstated here so that the story can be fully understood.
i believe if you only have a short period of time then the episodic format is better; but if you fancy snuggling up on a sunday night with your cola and popcorn, then the movie format is much better.
it is sad that nowadays alot of the movie versions cannot be purchased on dvd, allowing fans to lose what really is some of the best re-edits doctor who has ever seen.
movie formats available:
VHS: Revenge Of The Cybermen - 1983 The Brain Of Morbius (Heavily Edited) - 1984 Pyramids Of Mars - 1985 The Seeds Of Death - 1985 The Five Doctors - 1985 (although already feature length, this video is edited to loose excess material) The Robots Of Death - 1986 Day Of The Daleks - 1986 The Talons Of Weng Chiang - 1987 Death To The Daleks - 1987 Spearhead From Space - 1988 Terror Of The Zygons - 1988 The Ark In Space - 1989 The Time Warrior - 1989 The Deadly Assassin - 1989 (released in US only, but will work on UK player for some weird reason)
DVD: The Curse Of Fenric - 2003 Battlefield - 2008

Your one of possibly only a few people who has a complete collection of the 12" P. E. Daleks. I remember some chap had his large collection on YouTube but was missing the gold one. Welcome to the Gold Movie Dalek club
I'm hoping they have in , the new 3 dalek classic set. As its due out this week, but the FPI Web site says that Toys r Us may well have them first.

Happy smuggling Chris! So the FPI "Dalek exclusive" isn't an exclusive after all??? However given TRU unreliability for every branch receiving stocks of items - I am happy to have pre-ordered mine direct.
