Hi Guys.
when the bbc first started releasing who on video, they put the episodes from the serial for sale into one long film instead of the seperate episodes. many fans did not like this; and it stopped in 1989.
but i am one of fans who does like it. rather than keep stopping every 25 mins and listening to the theme music, there feels a better sense of continuity and understanding of the story.
my main favourite is the "heavily-edited" brain of morbius, cut from 95 minutes to 60. i feel although alot of material is omitted, this is the boring material. the story seems to go a little faster and is therefore more exciting to watch. i don't believe any vital scenes are omitted, a good thing.
nowadays we see some releases of movie edition on dvd - ie curse of fenric and battlefield. these are much easier to watch, and because alot of vital material was ommitted from broadcast causing confusion, it is reinstated here so that the story can be fully understood.
i believe if you only have a short period of time then the episodic format is better; but if you fancy snuggling up on a sunday night with your cola and popcorn, then the movie format is much better.
it is sad that nowadays alot of the movie versions cannot be purchased on dvd, allowing fans to lose what really is some of the best re-edits doctor who has ever seen.
movie formats available:
VHS:
Revenge Of The Cybermen - 1983
The Brain Of Morbius (Heavily Edited) - 1984
Pyramids Of Mars - 1985
The Seeds Of Death - 1985
The Five Doctors - 1985 (although already feature length, this video is edited to loose excess material)
The Robots Of Death - 1986
Day Of The Daleks - 1986
The Talons Of Weng Chiang - 1987
Death To The Daleks - 1987
Spearhead From Space - 1988
Terror Of The Zygons - 1988
The Ark In Space - 1989
The Time Warrior - 1989
The Deadly Assassin - 1989 (released in US only, but will work on UK player for some weird reason)
