I saw this going at a half reasonable price on the Bay and spent a good fortnight thinking of reasons not to buy it, inevitably though i fell to the temptation....
One of a series of classic Doctor Who statues this wasn't cheap needless to say but because quality collectables from the original series are so scarce you have to take the descicion whether or not to take the finacial hit. Ultimatly it comes down to your own tastes and i've always had a strong leaning to such statuettes and pottery so as anyone who knows me buying this particular 12" sculpt was always going to be a strong probobility.
The first thing to note with this figure is that it is pretty heavy, the base is detachable and there is a pin in the bottom of one foot that locks it together for security. In terms of fragility it is quite fragile, the Doctors scarf in particular is very prone to snap as it is solid cast and hangs down with no support,I cracked it while removing it from the packaging and while not serious is an unfortunate design flaw the sculptor really should have considered.
The detailing on the item is stunning. While very reminiscent of the old Product Enterprises 'Talking Tom' from a few years back this is enhanced due to the size affording greater detainling and I really can't fault a thing about it in that regard apart from maybe the bag of jellybabies being very unformed and vague. The weave & patterning on the Doctors Shoes, Scarf and even hands is expertly rendered and the face and distinctive teeth are an amazingly sharp likeness, no halfway sculpting here!
The choice of period whenever makers release a Fourth Doctor figure is almost exclusively from the season 12 or 13 era and I can only assume it's due to this being perhaps the most basic interpretation of this Doctor - here he nearly always has the Hat, the Scarf, Jelly Babies, Sonic Screwdriver and cravat, and i guess that must be the most appealing image to both market and scuplt to. This statue is superbly evocative of Tom Bakers Doctor from this period in every way, even the stance and pose is pure Tom!
It's a truly Great item & Full Marks from me.... .
