I want to talk Gift Sets. The 5/6" figures have proved popular releases as giftsets, especially 'themed' sets such as Daleks in Manhattan'.
For the most part they are very good releases and in the cases of the 'Genesis Ark set' or 'Army of Ghosts' incorporate items not available outside of the sets!
Where they start to fall down though is is when not released as a themed set, then it's a case of just the figures on their own being the draw. So far however this has been quite acceptable as the mix has been of both Doctor/Companion and a couple or so monsters for the visual interest.
But the recent Utopia giftset is the exception and worrying for more than the lack of any 'monster'....
With this release you get the ubiquitous brown-coated Doctor that has graced previous sets and Martha Jones and then the Jacobi/Simm Masters. This quartet is of visual interest as it is a virtual chart of progress for Character Options quality control in recent months - the Solid Tennant Doctor is of markedly superior detail and quality compared to the two newly cast 'Masters' he is cased with, the inferior plastic used for these two is wildly out of synch in comparison to the oldstyle molding.
Another problem is that while other sets make a point to include such accessories as rayguns or the Doctors sonic screwdriver this set does no such thing So you have some curiously empty hands on these figures.
Finally Four 'Human' characters is a very boring idea for a giftset. It needs a monster or some other item to add some excitement to it because as it is this set can be unkindly used to sum up Character Options position at the moment - Complacent and lazy.
