(Hmmm.... Should such an item be here in a Merchandise review thread?
I'll defer it to the Mods to decide )
MFX Replicas
First of all - No. I didn't pay the cited £700 pricetag for this.
I got lucky as a fellow collector had reluctantly put it up for sale to fund purchase of another item he'd targeted. This was a stroke of good fortune as I already have several Cyberman replicas in my collection but the pricetag on this very prestigious and modern MFX one was just too much for me to take the hit to my finances and justify it.
Previous Cyber-replicas are formed from fibreglass or Molds and are fairly straightforward affairs, but with MFX producing their replicas to the exact same standard of the actual TV series versions it is very apparent that Prop building has been elevated to a whole new level....
The first thing evident is that this really does feel like Metal - it's cold to the touch and looks solid! The paperwork that comes with it even reccomends metal polish be applied and details how to maintain the piece as a mettalic item...
I had strangely thought that this was a largely different design to the old series Cyberhelmets but comparing it it is actually totally in line with with those old school designs, the obvious advances in production and practicality merely mean the designers are now able to scale down it's size considerably meaning a leaner more humanscale cranium.
Still, one other thing worth noting is that while the new Cybermen on screen are seemingly smaller than the Classic series ones this is just an illusion - I saw one at the Manchester exhibition last year and was taken by surprise by just how big they are, huge!
This Cyberleaders human brain is quite effectivly realised and the molded transparent plastic covering it makes it quite chilling when you study it in context.
The items party piece though comes from a quite ambitious internal lighting arrangement, inserting eight pencil batteries into an internal battery pack enables you to flick a switch and the eyes and mouth light up along with the inner braincasing - these are pretty powerful lights too! I just hope they don't expire as there doesn't seem to be any way to replace them or repair any wiring faults...
Limited to 250 worldwide this is a real collector item. It's Unique in fact as it is serialised and registered to it's original purchaser, specifically made by MFX to order. There may be other replicas in the futurse but none will match the quality of an item made by the very hands that made the TV series props.
